Luck plays a great part in Roulette because the ball drops into a slot at random. The dealer (croupier) is the house and you pay against him or her. The croupier spins the wheel and deals with the wagers and payouts. The difference between European (also French) roulette and the American version is in the zero slot. The European wheel has one zero and 37 slots (36 for numbers). The American version adds a second zero and so has 38 slots.
How you play
1) You place your bet or bets on the table layout or on the outside on any numbers (zero too, if you choose). After all players have chosen their spots, the croupier sends the ball spinning around the wheel.
2) Until it is clear roughly where the ball will land, you can continue to place your bet but you must stop once the croupier says 'no more bets'.
3) As soon as the ball has come to rest, the croupier places a marker (the 'dolly') on the winning number. He then collects all the tokens from the losers and pays the winner, also in tokens.
4) You will win money if you are on the winning number or close to it.
The house advantage Bear in mind that a casino will have a 2.7% advantage on a single zero roulette wheel and a 5.26% advantage if there are two zeros. The house advantage on a five-number bet, i.e 0-00-1-2-3 is 7.9%.
The 'En Prison' rule With some casinos, when the ball lands on the zero, you can reclaim half your bet or leave it in place (en prison = in prison) for a second roulette spin. However if the ball again falls in zero, then you will lose your whole bet amount.
The ' La Partage' rule This rule is like the En Prison rule. However you lose half your bet and cannot leave on the table for a second roulette spin.
The payouts A Straight-Up bet is made on one number alone and it pays 35 to 1 odds, so you collect 36. When there is no house advantage you will collect 37 in Europe and 38 in the USA .
If you make a two-number bet, it is called Split Bet and pays 17 to 1. If you make a three number bet, it is called Street Bet and pays 11 to 1. If you make a four-number bet, it is called Corner Bet and pays 8 to 1. If you make a six-number bet, it pays 5 to 1. If you bet on the outside dozen or column, it pays 2 to 1. If you bet on the outside even money bet area, it pays 1 to 1
